|
|
Hi,
I'm just in the process of setting up emerge on a Win 7 64-bit laptop, and a curious thing has happened. My Skype icon isn't visible in emergeTray. It was visible in the system tray when I was using Explorer, so I'm guessing it's an Emerge problem rather than a Skype problem.
Skype is definitely running, and works as normal except that I can't actually get at it from the desktop. Any suggestions about what might be wrong? |

Maybe you hid it by mistake? If you press Alt when you click on a tray icon it will be added to the Hidden Icon list (similar to the Explorer hide list).
On the emergeTray configuration, check the Hidden Icon list if Skype is there and remove it.
Please report back. _________________

Hi, thanks for the quick response.
No, it isn't in the hidden icon list. Since the original post I've updated Skype to 4.2, and the behaviour is now even weirder. The icon still doesn't appear in the tray, but now there's a permanent Skype window in emergetasks with a blue border round it. The only way to get rid of it is to kill the process using the task manager.
Just to make sure it's not a Skype issue, I switched back to Explorer (briefly!) after the update, and there everything works as expected. I've also checked the registry entry for the Skype startup, and that's the same as it always was.
I'm using the latest dev version of ED64 (2771), by the way. |

Maybe it's a Skype and eD under Windows 7 x64 problem...
Have you restarted your PC since the update?
Skype is always loaded on my XP machine and I just updated to 4.2.0.152 and there is no problem at all... _________________

Yup, restarted several times, actually.
It's all working fine on my old 32-bit Vista machine, but I'm using ed 4.1.3 there - perhaps I should try going back to that version on the Win 7 machine, too? |

Heh, thanks for that! Now I'm back to the original situation in the first post on this thread. The unclosable Skype window has gone, but it's still not appearing in the emergeTray. |

What a crap Skype 4.2 is under Windows 7 x64 (haven't tested under x86).
You can't simply minimize to tray (even under Explorer) it always shows up in the Tasks.
I can confirm that the tray icon is missing and that you can't simply exit Skype under eD. Maybe eD is confused by the fact that the program shows simultaneously on the Tray and Tasks when minimized...
Can you try the old faithful Skype 3.8 (last version before version 4)?

Thanks again. That was another good suggestion. I'll be sure to look at that site for other apps that misbehave.
Unfortunately, Skype 3.8 only lasts for about 30 seconds before crashing, which makes it pretty much unusable, so I guess that for the moment I'll just have to put up with 4.2.
No doubt you guys will find a way round this nonsense soon enough! |

Update: I tested Skype 4.2 in a Win7 x86 VM.
The tray icon does show up under eD. And it always shows up both in tasks and tray because Skype decided so. Unfortunately the only place Skype has an Exit command is in the tray icon...
Conclusion: except for the tray icon not showing up under Win7 (x64 only), everything else are new Skype "features" _________________

| Oh yes. Now why didn't that show up when I searched the forum for previous posts on the problem? |

hi, I just started to use eD and I like it so much, went through the troubles of compiling Launchy for Windows 7 x64, now I do not need to go back to Explorer shell any more, I will stay with eD forever (at least as long as its up to date )
however, I have got completely the same problem as all the other people in this thread: latest Skype doesnt show up in the thread, I know that since 4.2 version they moved to this new feature a-la Live Messenger (MSN) not to show up in the tray but instead to be always at taskbar
I hate this behavior (how did they come up with such an idea at all?) so I played the trick with Vista SP2 compatibility: it works for MSN, it works for Skype with Explorer as shell
but in eD I fail to see Skype in tray (although MSN is shown there properly) I do believe that they are using some kind of new API from Windows 7 to place a tray icon, which is probably not properly handled by eD
well, I dont care much about Skype, and it is not a stopper for me to use eD at home at all, but I was planning to move my desktop at work to eD as well and there we make use of Skype for all kind of communication with partners and customers, as well as for intercommunication and its essential for me to get it right
so please... fix this problem I'm thinking to look at the problem myself, but I'm not sure how quick I can get into the whole development of eD, I'll try though
best regards and thanks a lot for the great desktop!
vladimir
P.S. MeToo, where does one get "eD build 4.2.1.92"? should I build it myself from source? |
