Discussion on the development of Emerge Desktop

emergeLauncher's "Live folder" features

Postby GetReal » Thu Nov 24, 2011 10:17 pm

Sorry for having disappeared after creating this topic, but I think I'll stick for a little while since now I own a eeePC, which makes emergeDesktop perfect for it.

Moving on, emergeLauncher's "Live folder" has some main features missing, in my point of view. Those would be:
  • Having the option to show the filename below the icon
  • Show thumbnails for images, instead of an image icon
  • Show folders first, files second
  • Placement of the files wherever I want, within the app space.

If I remember more things, I'll surely write them. :) But these are the ones preventing me from moving to eD definitively. :|

Offtopic: Hwooo, one more thing, and I believe this one is rather simple! What if, bare with me, Z-order were a number instead of just 3 options, so we could have, for example, 2 instances of emergeCommand one of them being a shadow for the other one and put BOTH of them (still one behind the other) behind an emergeLauncher instance.

I might be making a lot of requests, but I had those ideas so I had to write them, otherwise they would be forever lost.

Hi GetReal

Welcome back :)

eD is indeed perfect for small screen netbooks ;)

Those sound like nice options for emergeLauncher but unfortunately computerfreaker is MIA and ironhead is so busy with Real Life that we can't manage to get a new release :(

I didn't quite understand the Off-topic... Can you explain in more detail or create a mockup image?

As soon as I take care of my eeePC, I'll try to use it to create the mockup image.

I can't illustrate it as I have imagined, but try to see it like this.
I'd like to stack 1 eLauncher and 2 eCommands in this order:
  • eLauncher
  • eCommand
  • eCommand
With the following z-order number, respectively:
  • 3
  • 2
  • 1

This means that the eLauncher stays on top of the eCommand which in turn stays on top of another eCommand. This would allow me to have a "normal" desktop with a shadowed clock composing the background as well.

To know more about z-order, click here.
I know it says "needs additional citations for verification", but from what I've read it's correct and explains with more in-depth my idea.

Can't you make three separate screenshots and then compose as layers in Gimp?

In any case, I'm well aware of z-order :)

But for Windows there are only 3 levels for program windows: Top, Bottom (above the Desktop) and Normal.

The only way to have what I think you are asking would be to group applets as layers (which would be a fantastic new feature) and then the whole group would have the same Z-order

In that case, I can live "only" with the features I presented previously. ;)
